Alexios Makrembolites ("only one Byzantine writer of this age who presents the notion that the ordinary, underprivileged people have any positive role to play in the running of society. His name was Alexios Makrembolites. Among other works he wrote (about 1343) a Dialogue between the Rich and the Poor, which is the closest thing to a sociological document to come out of fourteenth-century Byzantium" Nicol 1979, p. 26)
