Alexander James O'Connor (born May 4, 1998), better known by his stage name Rex Orange County, is an English recording artist and songwriter who grew up in the village of Grayshott near Haslemere, Surrey. [1] [2] [3]
The name Rex Orange County is based on a teacher given nickname, the OC, after O'Connor. [4]
At age five, O'Connor was a part of the choir at the school where his mother worked. [5] He grew up listening to Queen, ABBA, Green Day, and Weezer, along with more classical soulful artists, like Stevie Wonder also inspired him. [6] He is a drummer, self-taught pianist, and he picked up the guitar when he was 16. At this age, he started to produce his own music on Logic software. [6]
At the age of 16 he went to the BRIT School, starting there as a drummer, one of four percussionists in his year. This exposed him to new and fresh music. [5] The relative rareness of his primary instrument provided him with wide exposure to various projects of others in his school. Rex Orange County is a multi instrumentalist, and in addition to blending in his voice and playing drums, guitar and piano, he produces his own projects. [4] [2]
On September 3, 2015, Rex Orange County self-released his first album bcos u will never b free on SoundCloud. [2] [7] On September 4, 2015, the young star released the album to a free music-sharing platform known as Bandcamp, allowing anyone to download the music at no charge. [8] This put him on Two Inch Punch's radar, who provided him with a management team. They also collaborated on a few songs - "UNO", "Best Friend", and "Untitled". This also caught Tyler, the Creator's attention. He sent him an email, appreciating the album, and he also flew him out to L.A. to work on Flower Boy. [6]
Rex Orange County shared online the DIY "UNO" recording in 2016 when he was 18. Clash magazine wrote, "the buoyant keyboard riff underpins a hypnotic half-spoken vocal, one that veers from topic to topic in a hazy burst of creative mania." [9]
In 2017 he released his second album Apricot Princess. [10] The name comes from his pet name for his girlfriend, Thea. Three months after the release of his second album, Rex Orange County was featured on Tyler, the Creator's album Flower Boy; he contributed vocals to and co-wrote the songs "Boredom" and "Foreword". [10] Tyler picked up on O'Connor because of his debut album, reached out via SoundCloud and brought him to Los Angeles. [2] His work has been compared to "other artsy, post-genre teen artists". [11]
As of 9 May 2018 [update], the most popular track by Rex Orange County on Spotify was "Loving Is Easy" created in collaboration with the Dutch artist Benny Sings. [10] The song was covered by the Swedish singer Tove Styrke. [12] On April 16, 2018, Rex Orange County performed the song in his television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. [13] On May 31, 2018, Rex Orange County released a cover of " You've Got a Friend in Me", performing along with Randy Newman, the creator of the song. [14] He was also featured in Spotify's Rise Program. [6]
On 9 October 2018, Rex Orange County was scheduled to perform on the French television show Quotidien. The group participated in rehearsals, but withdrew from the live performance after seeing a comedy sketch by regular contributor Alison Wheeler that included a satirical advertisement mocking the Ku Klux Klan. English language publications the Fader reported that O'Connor explained in a tweet that evening that he felt the sketch was "at odds with my core values". The Fader and Just Jared also reported that the next day O'Connor followed up with another tweet describing the sketch as a "tasteless joke" and stating, "Clearly I’m not good enough for them. Oh well, at least the KKK is! Fair enough.” According to Quotidien in a segment aired the next day, during rehearsals O'Connor, who does not speak French, saw video images that were part of the comedy sketch without understanding the French language audio content, and did not realize it was satire. Quotidien also reported that explanations to O'Connor in English by the show's producers were unable to resolve the misunderstanding. On its French site The Huffington Post observed that at first glance the sketch did not appear to support white supremacy, and that in looking closer it was clear that such a claim was "totally false".
On 14 February 2019 he released a new single called "New House".
Rex Orange County has performed live in twelve different countries, over 63 times in the course of his career from 2016 to 2019. He continuously tours internationally and has reportedly traveled a cumulative distance of 62,876 miles total thus far. [15]
In January 2018 O'Connor came in second in the BBC Sound of 2018 award after Norwegian singer Sigrid. [16]

Horace Jeremiah "Jerry" Voorhis (April 6, 1901 – September 11, 1984) was a Democratic politician from California. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1937 to 1947, representing the 12th Congressional district in Los Angeles County. He was the first political opponent of Richard Nixon, who defeated Voorhis for re-election in 1946 in a campaign cited as an example of Nixon's use of red-baiting during his political rise [39].
Voorhis was born in Kansas, but the family relocated frequently in his childhood. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University (where he was elected to the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa) and a master's degree in education from Claremont Graduate School. In 1928, he founded the Voorhis School for Boys and became its headmaster. He retained the post into his congressional career [40].
In the House of Representatives, Voorhis was a loyal supporter of the New Deal and compiled a liberal voting record. His major legislative achievement was the Voorhis Act of 1940 requiring registration of certain organizations controlled by foreign powers. After being re-elected by comfortable margins four times, he faced Nixon in 1946 in a bitter campaign in which Voorhis' supposed endorsement by groups linked to the Communist Party was made into a major issue. Nixon won the Republican-leaning district by over 15,000 votes and Voorhis refused to run against Nixon in 1948.
During a writing career spanning a half-century, Voorhis penned several books. Following his defeat by Nixon, he retired from politics and worked for almost twenty years as an executive in the cooperative movement. He died in a California retirement home in 1984 at the age of 83 [41].
California State Polytechnic University Pomona is home of the Broncos, located atop a large mass of land between several major counties, including San Bernardino and Los Angeles. [42] As a Polytechnic CSU, Cal Poly Pomona is unique in terms of its relation to Cal Poly San Louis Obispo. Both campuses represent excellence within the fields of STEM, known to launch students into research opportunities and core classes early on rather than in the later years of their college careers. [43]
By bringing textbook concepts to life with hands-on learning and advanced technical training, students from CPP leave with immaculate knowledge and high potential for economic success.
CPP is a four-year university, primarily infamous for its hands-on education and engineering programs. It is ranked high in the nation's top public universities, taking reign as the fourth best university on the West coast. Since Cal Poly Pomona lies within the boundaries of the Cal State system, the overall value of education remains sky-high while the actual cost of classes and extracurricular involvements remain low in comparison to other university systems.
