Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).
Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.
This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.
If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.
PART 1
When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.
1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.
Answer: In general, I believe it is particularly important to assume good faith in that, new editors are here to contribute but not to harm Wikipedia. Even though they might not be aware of Wikipedia policies and guidelines and as such may make some mistakes trying to contribute. Assuming good faith create good links between editors of varrying experience and may inspire new ones to stay and keep editing rather than get scared and stop editing entirely due to hostility and pressure from more experinced once. Hence, new editors are an integral part of the Wikimedia movement as they bring along fresh ideas, new creativities and innovations and contribute a long lasting works.
One must also recognise that everyone including experienced editors can make mistakes and thus, good faith helps in guiding editors on Wikpedia.
2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?
Answer: Notability in Wikipedia means certain criteria that a topic needs to meet before it is to be accepted as a standalone article. Notability deals with the encyclopedic suitability of a topic. An article must therefore meet the meet the general notability guidelines and the subject-specific notability guidelines. The general notablity guidelines simply deals with coverage received by a topic from sources that are independent of the subject. While specific notability guidelines deals with the significance and prominancy of a specific subject in relation to academics, books, events, geographical features, music, organizations, people, sports etc. and it has to be free from what Wikipedia is not policies.
3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?
Answer: No, because from what Wikipedia is not policies; Wikpedia is not a manual book, guidebook, textbook or journal.
4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?
Answer: From my understanding, GNG deals with the recognition of a subject from independent reliable sources. While, specific notability guidelines deals with the notability or importance of the subject in relation to some specific guidelines or topics such as academics, books, events, geographical features, music, organizations, people, sports among others. Thus, when patrollling an article one must recognise the subject specific guidelines of the article first as an important topic may lack sufficient independent sources in some cases. Therefore, GNG covers the aspect of coverage from reliable sources that are independent from the subject, while specific notabiity guidelines focus on the notability of the subject itself.
5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?
Answer: From Wikipedia:PAGEDECIDE guide, a future event may clearly be suitable for a standalone page (such as summer olympics). However, before creating such articles, one should make sure that the likelihood of the future event occurring is reasonably assures. Therefore, before creating a topic 2024 Summer Olympics page, there must be confirmation from a reliable sources on the occurrence of the event. Hence, since the editor did not create any source, the subject may be considered not notable until evidence is provided from reliable independent sources.
6. A New York city based 2021 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.
Answer: not notable because 1) Wikipedia is not a newspaper Wikipedia:NOTNEWS nor means of promotion Wikipedia:PROMOTION 2) The statement above is done in a form of news or promotion of the just starting software company receiving huge amount of investment. In Wikipedia, one can add recent updates but, in an objective and unbiased style, free from puffery.

No matter how high-profile release may be as nothing is certain in the face of production, casting issues may interfere with a project well ahead of its intended filming date.

Reliable source | means a criteria that strictly make sure that all majority and significant minority views that have appeared in those sources are covered in a neutral point of view by an independent, reputable and original sources that are fact checking, trusted and non-questionable, non-self published nor user-generated. Reliability depends on both the i) the piece of work (book, article..) ii). The creator of the work (the writer, journalist) and (iii). The publisher of the work (for example, Random House or Cambridge University Press) |

User generated sources | Are sources that are largely generated by the user or the content are in favour of the user, especially personal websites and personal or group blogs (bbut excluding newspapers and magazine blogs), social media handles, fansites, video and image hosting services, most wikis and other collaboratively created websites. | ![]() | |
Non Independent source | A non-independent source is the opposite of independent source, that is, are topics that cover an interest or biased perspective. Non independent sources have no editorial independence and have conflict of interest. For instance, a press release is said to be non independent if it is written either by the business or organization it is written about, or by a business or person hired by or affiliated with the organization. However, non-independent sources may be used to source content for articles, but the connection of the source to the topic must be clearly identified. They include contents from Press releases, Syndicate stories or conflict of insterest. | {{tick}. Not independent source can NOT be used to contribute to the notability of an article. Just like self source, it can only be used sparingly which indicated directly about a subject after the subject has already established notability requirements that required. Type | Explanation | Sources (15 Primary ; 5 Secondary ; 5 Tertiary) | Comment by Cass |
---|---|---|---|
Primary | Are original materials that are close to an event, and are often accounts written by people who are directly involved. They offer a direct insider view of an event, a period of history, a work of art, a political decision, and so on. | ![]()
|
![]() |
Secondary | is one step removed from primary source, that is it provides the authors' thinking based on the primary source. It contains an author's analysis, evaluation, interpretation, or synthesis of the facts, evidence, concepts, and ideas taken from primary sources. Secondary sources generally depend on the information provided by the primary sources. For instance, a paper reviewing a research is a secondary source of that research. | ![]()
|
![]() |
Tertiary | are publications such as encyclopedias and other compendia that summarize, and often quote, primary and secondary sources. Wikipedia and many other undergraduate textbooks are regarded as tertiary sources because they contain information from many secondary sources. | ![]()

Answer: Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia which means anyone can edit and as such some may come along with a form of bias of vandalism, and this may over-hype or damage the reputation of biography of living person or providing false information. Therefore, every content must be verified using inline citations from reliable source. Patrollers and administrators needs to ensure that all quotations, material whose verifiability has been challenged, all material that is likely to be challenged and all contentious matter about living and recently deceased persons are well cited from reliable sources.
Answer: Wikipedia and websites mirroring Wikipedia as a source should not be used as sources since Wikipedia is considered as user-generated sources. Content from a Wikipedia article is not considered reliable unless it is backed up by citing confirmed reliable sources that support the contents. However, Wikipedia can be used as primary source if Wikipedia or sister projects is being discussed in the project, but it has to follow the primary source policy.
Answer: Articles should be based on reliable, independent, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. A source can be reliable but not independent but not independent when it is sourced from a reputable source but the contents are self-interest or biased. Example, when a magazine publish a story about a product based on information provided by the director or founder of the company.
Answer: An independent source is a source that has no vested interest in a given Wikipedia topic and therefore is commonly expected to cover the topic from a disinterested perspective. Independent sources have editorial independence (advertisers do not dictate content) and no conflicts of interest. An article is therefore independent but not reliable when the source are independent of the topic but rely heavily of rumors, gossips, extremists etc.
Example Article about Bill Gates

[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home. [4]

Answer: Balance in writing Wikipedia articles is relatively important specially to show neutrality. When two different reliable sources contradict in an opinion. it is best to state each view point thereby maintaining neutrality. Due weight are also important in article writing so as to not give unnecessary attention to a significant minority views thereby making an article a bit confusing or vague, unless when writing articles about such controversies. It is therefore important to stick with the majority views on the topic and perhaps state the little minority under see also.
If a viewpoint is in the majority, then it should be easy to substantiate it with references to commonly accepted reference texts; If a viewpoint is held by a significant minority, then it should be easy to name prominent adherents; If a viewpoint is held by an extremely small minority, it does not belong on Wikipedia, regardless of whether it is true, or you can prove it, except perhaps in some ancillary article.
Answer: Wikipedia is built based on research that have been collected and organized from reliable independent sources, if no reliable sources exist, an article should not be created on Wikipedia. The best practice is to summarize information from reliable sources with each statement being verifiable. Hence, if you discover something new, Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought. Wikipedia contents is determined by previously published information rather than editors' beliefs, opinions, or experiences. Even if you are sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it.
Answer: The only way an original research or primary source can be accepted is when they are sourced from reliable independent sources or secondary sources independent of the original research

Answer: A COI/PAID editor can be spotted especially when a personal relationship exists between an editor and the subject or company/organization on Wikipedia. These relationships may be family, friends, clients, employers, or your financial and other relationships. A person may have COI if he/she has personal interest in the subject. While Paid editors include editing Wikipedia in exchange for money. When large amounts of text are added to an article on behalf of the article subject, the article has, in effect, been ghostwritten by the subject without the readers' knowledge. Responding volunteers should therefore carefully check the proposed text and sources. Look carefully at the following:
Editors who have a general conflict of interest may make unambiguously uncontroversial edits (but see WP:FINANCIALCOI). They may:
Answer: If you notice COI, you should; 1. Advocacy, noticeboards: If a user's edits lead you to believe that they might have a COI (that is, if they have an "apparent COI"), and there has been no COI disclosure, consider first whether the issue may be simple advocacy. 2. Reporting to the conflict of interest noticeboard 3. Avoid outing: which include avoiding revealing the identity of the editor 4. Accounts that appear to be single-purpose, existing for the sole or primary purpose of promotion or denigration of a person, company, product, service, website, organization, etc., and whose postings are in apparent violation of this guideline, should be made aware of this guideline and warned not to continue their problematic editing. If the same pattern of editing continues after the warning, the account may be blocked.
Answer: If an undisclosed paid editor is noticed, the patroller should report it to the Administrators' Noticeboard (Incidents) or to the Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest Noticeboard if it does not involve revealing the private information of an editor. You can also email paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org with why you believe an editor is engaged in paid editing and there is private information and you can also contact member of the CheckUser team directly.
Notes
G11 (promo) - What constitute a G11? At times it is hard to define. Although if a article is bluntly promote or advertise about the subject then it is a G11. Sometimes, the it is a little subtle and that would be a judgement call. As a rule of thumb, if article about an entertainers (actor/singer/DJ/artist and etc) in dept of how hard they work, how motivated they are, using all the puffery/flowery languages and especially the subject does not meet notability guidelines. For a corporation, we would see they list down all they product/services, their directors/key person in the company, they mission, their client, they are the influencer in their industrial, all the words/phrased to enhance/market the company and no substantial info that is supported by independent reliable sources.
G12 (copyvio) -
Copyright violation addresses the use of original expression without permission of the holder which is a violation of laws even the credit is given to the source. For articles, the Copyright Law gives the copyright protection to the “original works of authorship fixed in in a tangible medium of expression” in the newspaper, magazine and freelance article at the moment of their creation, for the life of the creator plus 70 years after, and 95 years for corporation publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.
A “fact” is not considered an original work of authorship; but how the ways facts are recorded where the style of the writing, choice and/or arrangement of words are copyrightable. An infringement of copyright is committed when a person uses the “exact words /almost exact words in a consecutive manner” of the author/holder. To note, as a guideline, a few words copies from the original works and an idea of expression such as "weather the storm", 'crossing the Rubicon" "as dead as a doornail" and etc. proper nouns, document/event/treaty/person/title/ names are generally acceptable and so is a direct quote of speech. However, any longer phrases which would be expression in a number of ways are copyright protected. To use one of two short sentences on a large article generally is ok but it will considered infringement if the edit entry is consists of big percentage of the original work and yet for some (such as newspaper/press/journalism that takes their work very seriously - anything more than 4 exact consecutively words would considered copyvio). To avoid copyright infringement, one needs uses his/her own words to convey the source’s information. Paraphrasing could minimize the the copyright violation; however, "threshold" ultimately, court judgement would determined the if copyright violation has been made.
Copyvio for texts or images shared the same notion that it is not a copyvio if the verbatim texts or images are taken from free licence and Public domain sites/specific page/image. Always check the "original source" even if in WikiCommon the editor who upload the image claim taken from a PD site, we need to check the link provided and if the site indicate the image taken from another source, then we check the source. For texts, we need to check the sites if it is a PD, sometimes the disclaimer of PD is not on the page, but on the home page or "about" page or FAQ page. Secondly, for older article (no in NPP Feed), any copyvio texts found, we will revdel it as it is almost always it is not the first versions. If a small amount of verbatim texts found in NPP Feed articles, we would revdel them; but large amount of verbatim texts we will tag G12.
Lastly, here are a few examples where the German car maker Audi was sued for copyright breach.
1. Audi infringed copyright violation over Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” in their commercial advertising. [5]
2. Audi was fined US $ 965,000 over copyright infringement for using 10 words from Brian Andreas’s story of “Angel of Mercy” - [6]
I think I just had a wake-up call, and it was disguised as a car, and it was screaming at me not to get too comfortable and fall asleep and miss my life. (Audi commercial) Some people don’t know that there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don’t get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.(Brian Andreas’ print)
Spot COI / PAID
COI editors are permitted to edit Wikipedia and create on the affected articles; however, it is "HIGHLY DISCOURAGE/NOT RECOMMENDED as it is very difficult for the COI editors to write the article/input info into the affected article in [[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view}}.
1.Use person pronouns and possessives (I, we, my, our) 2.Multiple references to company, financial listings, staff lists, interviews, own publication, press release, blog and with clean references 3.Well written prose 'too perfect to be true' and only with single/2 edits 4.Editors have created multiple company related articles 5.Editors disclosed their COI/PAID in their userpage (not tag with COI disclose), or disclosure when they ask question in WP:Teahouse, WP:Help Desk, WP:AFCHD or receivers' talk pages.
A7/A9/A11 - Credible claim of significance - If the subject content do have such claim, then it is not a A7 even the article at the present stage of the article is not notable. Choose other method. (1) after a WP:BEFORE and found no independent reliable sources to support the notability requirements, then nominated for

In this assignment we look at tagging pages for problems. There any many tags available in Wikipedia and we will look at some of them here.
Please read WP:TAGGING and answer the questions below. Please provide explanation in your own words and provide hist diff when applicable.
Answer: We place tags to a problematic article in order that to ask other editors to improve the article that we can not or will not improve ourselves.
Answer: is adding tags for non-obvious or perceived problems—without identifying the problem well enough for it to be easily fixed—is frequently referred to as "drive-by tagging"; especially when done by editors who are not involved in the article development.
Answer: i. Avoid vague tagging that will result in further confusion ii. Avoid too many tagging in one article: If an article has many problems, tag only the highest priority issues. iii. Avoid wrong tagging. Don't when a tag does not explain the problem you want to tag or when no tag exist for that specific problem. iv. unhelpful tags: don't put tags that will not help in improving the article. v. redundant tags: Avoid adding two tags to the same article, section or passage that essentially mean the same thing, in a whole. vi. Avoid adding tags to non-obvious problems without discussion vii. Don't tag an article if you can easily and confidently fix the problem. viii. Don't do "drive-by" tagging.
Answer: When the purported problem has being solved; or when an editor sees tag that could not see the purported problem with the article and does not see any detailed complaint on the talk page may remove the tag

Uncle Bash007, Assignment 9 - last assignment before Final exam. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 08:22, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ Cassiopeia, I am through with the assignment.
7. Guram Kutateladze who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 12-2.
Answer: Notable. 1) the above statement has met SSN guidelines of prominent sports and athlete with outstanding record in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. 2) The statement was written in an objective and unbiased style and free from mere puffery. However, the subject may be not notable since Wikipedia is not a directory and the statement consist of directory.
8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2022 and to be released on August 2023 in the cinemas.
Answer: Not Notable 1) from Wikipedia:Notability (films), films should only have their own pages if the principal photography of the film is released. 2). No matter how high-profile release may be as nothing is certain in the face of production, casting issues may interfere with a project well ahead of its intended filming date.
9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2021 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.
Answer: Notable 1) The candidate have met the Wikipedia:POLITICIAN guidelines in that even though he had not being previously elected for a political role, he has multiple coverages from local newspapers. 2). The guideline states that just being a political candidate elected or unelected does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the general notability guidelines (have enough coverages from independent sources.
10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2020 and his songs are listed in
Spotify.
Answer: Not notable 1). The subject has not met several guidelines in that, he has only one album; has not being covered from many reliable indepent sources (not from multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself) 2). Even though his song was listed in a popular national and international Music streaming provider, the subject has failed to meet several criteria and such it is not notable for a standalone article
Answer: 1). Notable under Wikipedia:NACADEMICS in that he has met criteria 1,2,4,5,7 & 8
2(a). Criteria 1 states that: The person's research has made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources. Hence, Carlos has worked extensively in in game theory, bounded rationality, social choice, and behavioral economics
(b). Criteria 2 stated that: The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level. Hence, the subject has met this criteria in that he is a speaker of the interdisciplinary research unit "Psychoeconomics," funded by the German Research Foundation (GRF)
(c). Criteria 4: The person's academic work has made a significant impact in the area of higher education, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions. Carlos har authored and co-authored important books and worked on many significant topics, game theory, behavioural economics etc.
(d) Criteria 5: The person has held a named chair appointment or "Distinguished Professor" appointment at a major institution of higher education and research (or an equivalent position in countries where named chairs are uncommon). Criterion 5 can be applied reliably only for persons who are tenured at the full professor level, and thus Carlos became a full professor of microeconomics at the University of Konstanz (Germany, 2005) and later moved to the University of Cologne (Germany, 2012)
(e) Criteria 7: The person has made substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.

Answer v any criteria: ChoCo (group)
(1) after a WP:BEFORE and found no independent reliable sources to support the notability requirements, then nominated for
WP:AFD, or R2 to draft space if no sources are provided (do R2 sparingly). If it is a {[WP:BLP]] without source, then
WP:BLPPROD or R2. - see
Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance
