Earless rabbits are rabbits that do not have long ears characteristic of the species.

Causes

Rabbits can be born earless from genetic defects. Some earless rabbits are born normal and have their ears chewed off by their mothers during overattentive grooming. [1] Close examination reveals wounds and ear canals.

Til (February 2012 – March 14, 2012) was a rare earless bunny who was crushed to death when a television cameraman stepped on him. [2] [3] Til was born in a litter of 6 at a zoo in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Saxony, Germany. Til was going to be introduced as a new German celebrity animal but was a victim of the news team invited to film him. Til's death attracted world wide news coverage.

Til was named after Til Schweiger who wrote, produced, directed and starred in Keinohrhasen (Rabbits Without Ears). [4]

Til's body was frozen and will be stuffed and exhibited. The zoo has been offered replacement bunnies, but plans to reject them all. [5]
