Mike Mitchell Voice Studio

Mike Mitchell (born November 16, 1950), is an American singer, dancer, actor and, in recent years, a renowned teacher of vocal technique in New York City. A professional performer since the age of 8 in his native St. Louis, Missouri, his earliest performances were as a member of the children's (and later the adult) choruses of the Municipal Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, during the tenure of Eleazar de Carvalho.

Musical Theatre Years

Arriving in New York City at the age of 19, he appeared on Broadway and in national touring productions of such musical hits as No, No Nanette, Hello, Dolly, A Christmas Carol, Mack & Mabel, Guys & Dolls, The Robber Bridegroom, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, among many others. He was accorded the rare distinction of being reviewed fr an understudy performance in No, No Nanette by the nationally syndicated columnist Shirley Eder.

Classical Dancer

Toward the end of his musical theatre career, Mitchell (classically trained both as a dancer and singer) appeared briefly as a character dancer for two and a half seasons with the American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House, including two broadcasts of the Live from Lincoln Center series (in The Firebird, and as one of the high priests in Natalia Makarova's staging of La Bayadere). He performed the " Coachmen's Dance" in the ballet Petrouchka with the renowned Danish premier danseur Erik Bruhn, in the latter's last performances of the title role. This led to similar appearances at Lincoln Center with such diverse dance companies as The Stuttgart Ballet, The London Festival Ballet, and The Ballet Nacional de Cuba. It was during these years that Mitchell began to re-train his singing voice to adapt it more to the opera and recital stage.

Classical Singer

During the early 1980's, Mitchell studied with the ground-breaking teacher Cornelius L. Reid, as well as two of Reid's foremost students, Denes Striny and Tony McDowell. This led to a classical singing career that included an extensive series of recital and concert performances (including two solo performances at the Carnegie Recital Hall), as well as leading roles in such operas Don Giovanni, The Old Maid and the Thief, Cosi fan Tutte, Albert Herring, and Die tote Stadt.

Voice Teacher

In 1984, Mitchell opened the Mike Mitchell Voice Studio at Carnegie Hall, where he began teaching while still pursuing a busy performing career. After becoming a member of The Voice Studio, he now claims one of the most diverse studios in New York City, with students in virtually every major musical on Broadway, including many leading artists. Since 2006, he has been teacher of vocal technique for the Tepper Semester of Syracuse University.
