The Immortal Mississippi John Hurt is the second studio album, but fourth album altogether recorded by folk/ blues musician Mississippi John Hurt. [1] It was released posthumously by Vanguard Records in 1967, as Hurt had died from a heart attack on November 2, 1966. Like his previous release, Today!, The Immortal is an eclectic blend of both traditional folk and blues songs, Christian hymns, and original compositions, all recorded solo and acoustic (with the exception of two tracks). [2] Robert Christgau, in collaboration with fellow critic David Fricke, placed the album on their "40 Essential Albums of 1967" list for Rolling Stone. [3]
