The deca-millennium bug describes a possible future breakdown of software architectures when the (
Western year turns from
9999 to
10000 in any
system time of computers. The problem would occur in the very beginns of the
10th millennium causing software and hardware breakdowns.
It has been proposed ( Long Now Foundation among others) to write the years with a " 0" prefix to prevent such breakdown, so the year "2009" would be written as "02009". As such, computer programmes would use the system accordingly.
