Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures (ROMP Pictures) Pvt. Ltd was set up in 2004 by film-maker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra with the objective of providing cutting edge, quality content for films.
Under ROMP’s banner, Rakeysh has written, produced and directed the film Rang De Basanti (2006), with an ensemble of Indian and International cast. Rang De Basanti won four National awards (President’s Medals), was India’s official entry to the Oscars 2006- 2007 and was also nominated by British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in the foreign language category 06-07.
Delhi-6 ( 2009) a comment on the caste and religious divide that has haunted India for 2000 years achieved tremendous critical acclaim and was elected for the prestigious Venice Film Festival, won two National Awards (President Of India Medals). The Variety has termed it as un-bollywood, ushering an era of new age Indian cinema.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag(2013) inspired by the “true life story” of athlete, Milkha Singh, is a comment on the ethnic violence and the partition of India in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan. The film made a clean sweep at all the popular film awards in India, including two National Film Awards (President of India Medals).
“Bollywood the greatest love story ever told” – a docu feature is an avantgarde take on how Indian cinema has reflected the changing socio-political landscape since India got independence from the British Raj. It was showcased at Cannes Film Festival -2012 to celebrate 100 years of Indian Cinema.
Mirzya (film)– (2016) is a contemporary take on the legend of Mirza-Sahiban, a tragic love story told as a musical spectacle.
Mere Pyaarey Prime Minister (2018) is the upcoming direction of Rakeysh Mehra. It is the story of an 8 year old boy Kahnu, living in Mumbai slums, wanting to build a toilet for his single mother Sargam, and how he will stop at nothing to make his dream come true. It is expected to release, in the summer of 2018.
Fanne Khan(2018), starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao Divya Dutta is being produced by ROMP. This multi starrer is a take on body shaming and stars the debutante Pihu Sand as a 17 year old teenager with a dream of becoming a pop star.
In the years to come, ROMP will look to aligning itself with leading media players to provide logistics support and technical expertise in the development of quality entertainment software. ROMP will scout for and nurture new talent in writers, directors, actors and technicians. Through such initiatives the company will contribute actively to the development, structuring and organisation of the Indian film industry.
