Smoke is a large-scale sculpture conceived by American artist Tony Smith in 1967 and fabricated posthumously in 2005. The sculpture is 24 feet high and 48 feet wide and made of painted aluminum. Smoke is unique in that it is Smith’s only large-scale work specifically intended for an interior space. The first iteration of Smoke was a painted plywood version installed at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. in 1967. LACMA’s monumental, painted aluminum version of Smoke was installed in 2008 and is one of three fabrications. [1]
