Civilizations and leaders

There are 18 civilizations available in the standard retail version of Civilization V. The player chooses a civilization and assumes the role of its leader, based on prominent historical figures. Each leader of a civilization has a unique unit, another unique unit or a unique building, and a special ability. ^[1] The player is able to interact with the leaders of other civilizations via the diplomacy screen, which features—for the first time in the series—fully animated leaders that speak their native languages. For instance, Augustus Caesar speaks in his native Latin and Montezuma speaks in his native Nahuatl.

In addition of 18 Civilizations in standard retail version, additional civilizations are available as downloadable content (DLC). ^{[2] [3]} Babylonia under Nebuchadnezzar II was announced as a bonus civilization included in the Steam and Direct2Drive Digital Deluxe Editions, ^{[2] [4]} and later offered for all on October 25, 2010. ^[5] Mongolia under Genghis Khan as well as a Mongolian themed scenario was offered as a free update on October 25, 2010. ^[5] Spain, under Isabella, and the Inca Empire, under Pachacuti, as well as a similarly themed scenario were offered as the first "Double Civilization and Scenario Pack" on December 16, 2010. ^[6] The "Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia" was released on March 3, 2011 and adds a Polynesian Empire under Kamehameha I. ^[7] The "Civilization and Scenario Pack: Denmark" was released on May 3, 2011 and features the Danish civilization under Harald Bluetooth. ^[8] On August 11, 2011 the "Civilization and Scenario Pack: Korea" was released featuring the Korean civilization under Sejong the Great. ^[9]

On August 11, 2011 a "Wonders of the Ancient World Scenario Pack" was released adding three new ancient wonders – The Temple of Artemis, The Statue of Zeus, and The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus – as well as a scenario based around the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This is the first time that new wonders are being added as DLC. ^[9]

Additionally, several DLC map packs were offered as a pre-order bonus from various retailers: Steam, "Cradle of Civilization: Mesopotamia"; Amazon.com, "Cradle of Civilization: Asia"; Gamestop and Play.com, "Cradle of Civilization: The Mediterranean"; and "Cradle of Civilization: The Americas." All four maps were later made available for purchase through Steam. Coinciding with the release of the "Civilization and Scenario Pack: Denmark" on May 3, 2011, an "Explorers: Map Pack" was released. ^[8]

In the Gods & Kings expansion pack includes nine new playable civilizations and leaders including Netherlands under William I, Celtica under Boudicca, the Maya under Pacal the Great, Carthage under Dido, Byzantium under Theodora, the Huns under Attila, Austria under Maria Theresa, Ethiopia under Haile Selassie, and Sweden under Gustavus Adolphus. Additionally, Spain under Isabella previously released as DLC, is included with the expansion in addition to the nine new playable civilizations. ^{[10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]}

In the Brave New World expansion pack includes nine new playable playable civilizations and leaders including Poland under Casimir, Brazil under Pedro II, Assyria under Ashurbanipal, the Zulus under Shaka, Portugal under Maria I, Indonesia under Gajah Mada, Morocco under Ahmad al-Mansur, Venice under Enrico Dandolo and the Shoshone under Pocatello. Additionally, Ethiopia, previously released in the first expansion, is included with the expansion in addition to the nine new playable civilizations for those players who did not purchase Gods & Kings. ^{[16] [17]}
