Local Food Hero is a food orientated television programme hosted and judged by celebrity chefs Gary Rhodes, Ollie Rowe and Rosemary Shrager. The programme is currently shown on the UKTV Food channel in the UK. The show's premise is to find, promote and award small independent food businesses in the United Kingdom. Businesses from 10 regional areas of the UK are first nominated by the public on the UKTV Food web site, and can later vote for who they think should win in each round, with the overall winner receiving £40,000. [1]
The first season would have a celebrity "regional scout" visit eight businesses in their locality, who they would talk to and sample their produce. The scout would then choose their favourite three who would then go on to the regional finals, where the three chefs and judges would pick their first second and third placed contestant, the winner of the regional heat would then be chosen by combining the judge's and public votes.
The second season saw a slight change where five finalists our chosen to go on the regional finals. [2]
The following are the three regional finalists for 2006: [3]
East Anglia's regional scout was Danny Boome.
London's regional scout was celebrity chef, Aldo Zilli
The regional scout for the Midlands was Terri Dwyer.
The regional scout for the North East was Brian Turner.
Edwina Currie stepped up as regional scout for the North West.
Paul Rankin was the regional scout for the Northern Ireland area.
The scout for Scotland was Kaye Adams.
Sarah Cawood scouted the South East region.
Michael Caines chose the eight finalists from the South West.
The scout for the Wales region was Angela Gray.
The overall winner for Local Food Hero 2006 was the Letheringsett Watermill [4]
Series 3 is, at the time of writing, still in the nomination process and has yet to be filmed. (5 May 2008)
