Ellie Knaggs (2 August 1893- 29 November 1980) was a women crystalloghrapher, who was born in Durban, South Africa. She started her education at North London Collegiate School and Bedford College, going up to Girton in 1913 and completing her studies in 1917. Arthur Hutchinson from the Mineralogical Laboratory, Cambridge, hired her as a Research Assistant until 1921. That same year she moved to Imperial College to undertake research leading to a Ph.D. From 1922 until 1925, Knaggs was a Demonstrator in Geology at Bedford, and, in 1925, she worked under W.H Braggs at the Davy Farady Laboratory of the Royal Institution after she was awarded a two-year Hertha Ayrton Fellowship. In 1927, when the Fellowship ended, she was invited to join the staff of the Royal Institution.
