Gombby's Green Island ( Portuguese: Gombby - A História de um Padeiro [1], or simply Gombby) is a Portuguese animated children's series created by Paulo Matias Maria and produced by the production company Big Storm Studios. The series, along with its music clips from 2008 to 2009 which serve as precursors, were produced using Autodesk 3ds Max 3D software. [2] Broadcasting rights to the series are permanently no longer sold and the series can only be partially watched nowadays, as the aforementioned production company and its official website have both shut down. However, some episodes have been archived.

Synopsis

The series takes place in a fictional island named "Green Island", where a 6-year-old [3] baker, Gombby, and all of his friends live in. The enigmas of science, healthy eating, physical exercise and respect for the environment are some of the ingredients in Gombby's stories, who is always willing to learn and live new adventures with Celeste, Strawy, Professor, Gadget Man, and other friends that live in the island.

Characters

  • Gombby is a young, astute boy who serves as the protagonist of the series. Living in a house shaped like a croissant, he has a knack for baking fresh bread and distributing it to the island's residence daily on his Eco-Bike. His curiosity and pleasant mood usually helps to unravel the island's mysteries, although this can sometimes land him in trouble. He really loves to eat oranges.
  • Celeste is Gombby's best friend who is very fond of nature, especially her flowers. She is very sweet and sensitive, always concerned about others and willing to help. Celeste lives in a beautiful house shaped like a flower pot. She is in charge of keeping the garden nice and tidy. In addition to her beloved flowers, Celeste also enjoys sailing along the coast in the company of Lighthouse Maid. Her favorite color is pink.
  • Strawy is an anthropomorphic scarecrow who is the agriculturist of the Green Island.
  • Professor is always ready to help with a kind word or to share a drop of his vast knowledge. It seems that the professor has an answer for everything. But that doesn't happen by chance. The teacher spends a lot of time at home, in the library, studying. The Professor is a source of inspiration and help to Gadget Man. Whenever Gadget Man has a problem with his inventions, the professor knows how to solve the problem.
  • Rainmaker lives in the red house in the shape of an umbrella. Since he is always worried about doing things right, he has just been appointed as the official postman of Green Island. Rainmaker is a rising star of a magician, who keeps improving his tricks as the stories unfold. He isn't satisfied whenever it is a sunny day on Green Island, therefore his raincoat's color can transition to blue whenever it's about to rain.
  • Gadget Man is an inventor who never ceases to be everyone in the island's favorite one, inventing curiosities such as giant soap bubble making machines, watering systems to keep Green Island green, and even rockets.
  • Brigadier is a Brigadeiro dessert who is usually seen using his pogo-stick. He lives in his Barracks (shaped like a brown cake). Brigadier is the one who guarantees order and respect for others so that it is preserved on Green Island and never misses the opportunity to call attention to anyone who doesn't appear to be following the law correctly.
  • Sarah is a mischievous girl who sometimes gets into trouble with her pranks. She can be a bit competitive and needs the help of her elders to accept that she is not always right. She and Simon both live in an igloo.
  • Simon is Sarah's best friend. He never abandons her on her adventures. Simon has a good heart and is always concerned for Sarah's well-being. Simon is the youngest on the island, which is probably why he is the most timid.
  • Do, Re, Mi and Fa - are Strawy's four talking birds of four different colors; Do is blue, Re is red, Mi is yellow, and Fa, the only female in the group, is green. Each of them have different personalities and Re and Mi are the only birds that have usual appearances.
  • Brushy is the dentist of the Green Island, who lives in a dental clinic shaped like a tooth.
  • Lighthouse Maid is the lighthouse keeper of the island.
  • Windmiller lives in the windmills. He is the miller of the Green Island, responsible for the production of flour who travels every day in the special solar energy train, collecting the grain and taking it to the mills and bringing back the flour to Gombby, aiding him in the bread-making process.
  • Bugaboo is a mysterious creature that lives in the forest and that Simon is always concerned about everytime he is there. Despite scaring Simon, he can be friendly, and can also be clueless about some things.
  • The Recycletots are the talking recycling bins that are used to help keep the Green Island green. It is usually located in the ecological point, but they can also move around the island since they are ready to help when needed. Each one has a special function and each one is responsible for dealing with another type of waste. They were invented by Gadget Man to help solve every problem involving trash of the island.
  • Sleepy serves as the main character of an adventure book that Gombby loves to read. In said book, Sleepy is the one who brings sleep to everyone on Green Island while flying on his pillow.

In the United Kingdom, an English language dub was produced for the series by Flix Facilities Limited, however, it wasn't broadcast on British television for unknown reasons, but was rather instead released on YouTube and on official Gombby apps, including one titled "Gombby Channel". In Italy, the series was broadcast on JimJam from 2012 to 2016, going by the local name of L'isola di Gombby. It was also broadcast on that television channel in different countries, such as Hungary, Poland, Romania, Portugal, and Czechia.

Production

Development

In 2008, the Gombby character was created as the inspiration of a dream by a group of Portuguese people. The character itself was part of an album of Portuguese language children's music featuring all the Gombby characters, whose name was "As Músicas do Gombby" (Gombby's Songs). All of these music clips were always aired on RTP and Canal Panda, including a lullaby featuring Sleepy flying over Gombby's village on his pillow - after which scene Gombby, who was reading his book the entire time, would get tired - and kindly say "Good night, see you tomorrow!" in Portuguese to the viewer. Nevertheless, these music videos could potentially, and possibly be, pilot "episodes" of the series.

One year after these apparent precursors to Gombby's Green Island, another lullaby was composed. However, the lighting and animation was different from the original; a new type of animation which would later be used in the TV series for the rest of it. The new version of the lullaby started with Gombby going back to his house on his Eco-Bike and getting ready for bed - as he is reading his book, the occurrences within it transition into an animated state - which ends with Gombby getting tired and falling asleep. The same phrase as in the first Gombby lullaby is heard, albeit spoken by an adult male. This is the first song of the TV series, judging by the new looks of the animation. Therefore, the TV series was created in 2010, years after the new version of Gombby's lullaby.

Reception

All the music from the Gombby's Songs album was being aired in Portugal from 2008 to 2010 on two television channels, Canal Panda and RTP. These music videos were very successful in audiences and merchandising. At that time, there weren't tablets, smartphones and the Internet for Portuguese people back then was still thoroughly (but not completely) advanced.

In 2009, once the new lullaby song from Gombby's Green Island was composed, the same results happened; being broadcast on both channels and being very successful. However, it is unsure it it was sold in merchandising.

In 2010, one year after the newest lullaby song, another song was composed. However, it was not a lullaby song, but rather a song that taught children to not be scared of their own fears and to deal with them. [4] This song, was also successful in audiences and merchandising. It was so successful to the point that it was even staged on Christmas 2010, with the footage being aired on TVI.
