From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Biology3595 is an advanced genetics course at Western University. Aside from coverage of current genetics topics by active researchers in the Biology department at Western University, there is also a Wikipedia component in which students learn how to create and edit Wikipedia articles with the intent of improving genetics related Wikipedia articles. This page is meant to be a training ground for Biology3595 students to improve their understanding of the course and to practice their Wikipedia skills.

How does it work?

- Purifies mrna-> amplify -> create cdna ->hybridize to chip tat is complementary to this

the higher the expression the higher the signal

use for analysis of differential expression analysis

if no knowledge of what to probe of, cannot test for. ie need gene characterization

extract gdna->shear/denature->IP against 5methylC->sodium bisulfite sequencing

MeDip - Methylated DNA Immunoprecipitation

Allows provision of score to diff exp analysis using an antibody specific for methylated nucleotides followed by statistical analysis

The higher the score the higher the level of methylation of a seq in a tissue

Determines extent of methylation of gdna in a particular tissue

ChIp CHIP

IP w/ Ab for meth histone (depending on what mark you're looking for)

Gene identification

Sequence candidates -> BLAST/database searching

Droplet digital PCR

PCR type that allows enrichment of low amts of template

gives quantification of presence
