Parasites Without Borders (PWB) is an international non-profit organization that was founded in New York City in 2016 by Daniel Griffin, MD, PhD, Dickson Despommier, PhD and Charles A. Knirsch, MD, MPH and later joined by Vincent Racaniello, PhD and Peter Hotez, MD, PhD. The organization aims to “serve as a comprehensive, advanced educational resource and disseminator of basic and clinical information dealing with all aspects of the global problems associated with the acquisition of parasitic diseases that adversely affect people around the world”. Structure
Parasites Without Borders was established in 2016 by three founders: Daniel Griffin, Dickson Despommier, and Charles A. Knirsch, all of whom "have had a life-time of experience in teaching parasitic diseases to students of medicine, both within the U.S.A. and abroad". [2] All three founders serve as co-directors along with Vincent Racaniello and Peter Hotez, who joined the organization in 2018.
Publications
In its effort to bring the latest medical and biological information to the forefront for researchers and practicing physicians, [3], Parasites Without Borders continues to make available, free of charge, the PDF version of Parasitic Diseases, a medical textbook that has been internationally recognized as the seminal medical reference on the broad topic of parasitology and disease mechanisms. [4] Hardcover copies of the textbook’s 6th and 7th edition have been distributed to over 100 countries throughout the world including Liberia, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, The Gambia, Mozambique, and Ethiopia. Medical schools that have been provided with the book include Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Columbia University, University of Panama School of Medicine, University of Gezira Faculty of Medicine, Nazarbayev University, University of Ghana Medical School, and University of Glasgow.
