Suh Okshik(μμ₯μ) is a journalist and a political science professor in South Korea. He was born in Jeolla Province, south of Seoul, in 1944. [1] He majored in Asian History at Seoul National University and joined the-then Orient Press(now known as Yonhap News Agency) upon graduation in 1973. During his years as a reporter, Suh covered various beats including International news, North Korean news and City news. He was also posted as a Correspondent in Bangkok from 1994 to 1997. After returning back to Seoul, he worked as a senior editor before being appointed as the editor-in-chief of Yonhap News from 1998 to 2000. Suh worked as a senior news analysis editor and columnist until his retirement in May of 2002. During his early years as a novice and aggressive reporter, Suh exercised his belief as a journalist despite heavy restrictions on media by the South Korean government. He covered major events such the Democracy National Salvation Declaration in 1976 which was led by former President Kim Dae-jung. In May of 1980, Suh was the only South Korean journalist to be granted a press pass for a close coverage on the Gwanju Democratic Uprising, one of the most devastating events in the 68-year history of the Republic of Korea. [2]Suh worked abroad in various places including Eastern Europe where he closely reported on the fall of Socialism. He also delivered exclusive stories from Middle East as a War Correspondent during the first Gulf War in 1991. After nearly 30 years as a journalist, he returned back to school to share his experiences and insights with young students. He received a masters and a ph.D in Political Science from Kyonggi University [3] and began teaching as a Journalism Professor at Honam Universityfrom 2003. Suh expanded his area of studies to Political Science and North Korea, based on his experience covering North Korean news as a specialist reporter. He gave lectures on Political Science at Hannam University, Kyonggi University and Sungkyul University. He currently serves as a president for Yonhap News Retired Employee Association. [4] His major publications include a Research Thesis: "a comparative study on the unification policies and formulas of South and North Korea," and "the ruling ideology of the Kim Jong Il regime, an analysis on 'Military-First Politics.
