Oppose Let´s keep it the way it is, easier to understand. Match in progress means that it gets updated when/if something happens, don´t see a need to change.

If a sport doesn't call it a match (say it calls it a game, or it's instead about a tournament) it would allow usage in a greater number of sports without the idiosyncraticness of the name. The redirect would still rename so that {{Match in progress}} could still be used.

Delete this template.
I believe that this template should be deleted as it is causing to much hassle with users using in progress to update live scores which isn't for wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a live scoring site.
