Would a picture of a generic flag not be better than the Swiss? A GFDL image something like
[1]?

Images in stub templates are optional and even discouraged (see
WP:STUB). I think that is unsightly and that if we don't use we should use no image at all. —

Stub images aren't discouraged anymore. It is true that these images were discouraged last year when the image server was dying of overload. Since the installation of new image servers, WP:WSS only discourages controversial images, something which has always been the case. The great majority of new stub templates use images, at it has been like that for a long time. It looks like WP:WSS will have to go through this guideline again. It has also been way too long since last time. Regards.

I'm not sure what, exactly, a generic flag would look like. I could make an image with randomly selected colors and hope it doesn't look too similar to any specific flag. —

Just FYI, someone has added an image of the Danish flag to the stub message. I was wondering if that was part of the discussion or not... -
