@ S.A. Julio and Dave Ondzuls: Currently for Group H we claim that Portugal and Ghana are advancing to the knockout stage, while Uruguay and South Korea failed to get past the group stage, before a single game has been played. Can we fix the tables so that they don't spuriously predict who's going to win the match before it's played? — kwami ( talk) 04:11, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
The way the tables are set up, they show the results before they occur, which would violate CRYSTAL if it were intentional, but is simply because they tables are not set up to display ongoing events. For example, currently for Group H, before a single game has been played, we claim that Portugal and Ghana are advancing to the knockout stage, while Uruguay and South Korea failed to get past the group stage. — kwami ( talk) 08:11, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
I tagged the template with {speculation} until the tables could be fixed (that was the tag closest to appropriate that I could find), and was reverted because "these tables are standard for all sports events," and told not to make changes to widely viewed templates, "especially if it's just because you're personally confused." But it's precisely the most widely viewed errors where the need for correction is most urgent, and it's not a matter of confusion. I understand that the problem is in the table setup, but that doesn't excuse making false statements. — kwami ( talk) 08:12, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
The requests above and several more at Talk:2022 FIFA World Cup indicate it's confusing for readers when the matches aren't all finished as it appears two teams have already advanced. Changing the wording to "Top two advance to knockout stage" from "Advance to knockout stage" would clarify this and would be simple to implement. Facts707 ( talk) 12:13, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
