The Main Article says, "During the 1921–22 school year, Carothers held a one-year appointment as a chemistry instructor at the University of South Dakota. It was at the University of South Dakota that he began his independent research, which resulted in an article accepted by the Journal of the American Chemical Society." That article in JACS would appear to be this one: "Isosterism of phenyl isocyanate and diazobenzene-imide." J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1923, 45(7), 1734-8. Although it says it is a "Contribution from the Chemical Laboratory of the Univ of South Dakota", the "Received" date is Oct 23, 1922 by which time he was already back at the labs of Roger Adams working on his PhD thesis at the Univ of Illinois and his address (for correspondence) is also Chemical Lab, Univ of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. By this, I suspect that Carothers was encouraged and allowed to submit his Univ of S. Dakota results by Adams, for whom he was working at the time. Had Carothers not had the support of Adams or if he had stayed at S.
