"His educational opportunities having been limited by his bourgeois background, Havel first rose to prominence as a playwright." Being bourgeois would do the opposite of limiting ones educational opportunities. That line in the paragraph makes almost no sense. Perhaps being born just prior to WW II and growing up behind the Iron Curtain would limit your educational opportunities, but being upper middle class not so much.
