I've just protected the article for three days to stop the edit war which is currently underway. I'd strongly suggest that you attempt to resolve this issue - either here or elsewhere - through discussion rather than reverting one another. Nick-D ( talk) 11:37, 8 August 2010 (UTC) reply

I will just say that I had no intention of reverting further at this stage. However, I will stick by what I have previously stated in edit summaries: this matter has previously been discussed and the independant admin, Ian and myself all agreed that a reliable, published reference be supplied to support the claim made. This has not been done. Abraham, B.S. ( talk) 11:44, 8 August 2010 (UTC) reply

El Kantara

The "El Kantara" link goes to the city in Algeria. Isn't it supposed to be Al Qantarah El Sharqiyya in Egypt? I don't know much about this aspect of the war or anything about Tom Derrick, but it would seem to make more geographical sense to me. 68.1.172.2 ( talk) 02:12, 23 March 2012 (UTC) reply

1995 Australia Remembers Stamps

I found that Tom Derrick featured on the one of the 1995 Australia Remembers Stamps. I have found using google images searching:'1995 Australia Remembers 45c stamps'. A block of stamps which clearly shows Tom and his name printed on the stamp. Can this block of stamps or a cropped version be added to his wikipedia page? Nickname

@ Peacemaker67 and Ian Rose: given you haven't discussed on the talk page... if his nickname is commonly used (ie more so than his given name, a la Whitey Bulger or Bunny Berigan) then move the article accordingly, to Diver Derrick or Diver Tom Derrick or whatever the hell it is. If it is not then, like every other person in the world with a nickname, it should not be in the opening name in the lede. Giant Snowman 13:25, 9 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Hi. I'm struggling to see anything in the MoS that stipulates a nickname must be a common name (and thus the article title) or it cannot appear in the lead. Indeed, MOS:NICKNAME appears to encourage the inclusion of well-known nicknames, regardless of the article title and with the sole exception of common hypocorism. "Diver" is commonly used alongside "Tom"/"Thomas", which would indicate that (again, per MOS:NICKNAME) the methods currently used in the article are perfectly acceptable. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. ( talk) 13:54, 9 April 2020 (UTC) reply
So are you proposing we have ledes which open with eg 'Michael "MJ" Jackson' or 'George W. 'Dubya' Bush" etc.? Those are well-known nicknames. I'll also refer you to the part of MOS which says "If a nickname is used in place of the subject's entire name, it is usually given separately [...] Nicknames and other aliases included must be frequently used by reliable sources in reference to the subject [...] Do not cram multiple hypocorisms and nicknames into the name in the lead sentence; complicated naming should be explained separately".
In this example it is better to give his full name in the opening boldface, then later on in the lede explaining nicknames of 'Tom' and 'Diver'. Giant Snowman 14:52, 9 April 2020 (UTC) reply
Conflating Derrick with others is not particularly helpful nor relevant here. The quoted section of MoS also does not appear to apply: "Diver" isn't used in place of the subject's name, but commonly in complement to it (i.e. "Tom 'Diver' Derrick" not "'Diver' Derrick"). Further, the naming is not overly complicated and the nickname is frequently used by reliable sources. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. ( talk) 15:05, 9 April 2020 (UTC) reply
Agree with Abraham, B.S.. There is nothing in policy that requires the moving of the article, and the inclusion of the nickname in the first sentence is allowed if it is frequently used by reliable sources (which it is). Peacemaker67 ( click to talk to me) 23:00, 9 April 2020 (UTC) reply
