Having a section on Foreign influences may be added if it is important but not enough of it can be written in the history. The FA most closely related is Buddhist art which only deals with history and styles. The styles section is divided geographically on Buddhist Art though it may be better here to divide by region and by religion because I'm certain Islam must have had a profound influence on Indian sculpture. Regarding regional variations, we have to surely include the Chola (etc.) sculptures, Mathura and Gandhara schools. Can't think of any famous single sculptures, but of course, we have some popular sculpture themes, like Nataraja. Does someone know about modern sculpture in India? Three items have been recently added and then good faith reverted. They all seem to easily fit the page. The first is a 'See also' listing, List of the tallest statues in India, which seems self-explanatory as a related entry. Then two templates, {{ Statues in India}} and {{ India topics}} (see section 'Society and culture' which contains the 'Sculpture' link), which seem obviously relevant to the page. Guess I'm missing why they were removed, and adding them back seems the logical edit. Randy Kryn ( talk) 23:23, 20 July 2021 (UTC) reply

I view the recent statues to be political advertisements paid for by the governments of the day. That in of itself is not an argument against their artistic quality, but neither is their coverage in the compliant Indian media an argument for. Either way, I defer to @ Johnbod: in this regard. Well, ancient sculpture also tended to be "political advertisements paid for by the governments of the day" or similar, perhaps especially in India, where monarchs often found it prudent to finance religious art for religions they did not follow themselves, or get/subsidize their ministers to do so. I rather think that most of the very recent statues are largely paid for by devotees in fact, perhaps with some government/council money thrown in, maybe from the tourism development budget. The taste for big, big sculpture is evidently strong in Asia these days (the top 15 in the global List of tallest statues are all Asian, from the last 30 years), as it used to be in the Americas, & I think the SA link will be appreciated by many readers. The list in fact gets more than double the views of this page. Really the lack of coverage of this trend in the article itself is a fault (probably mine, as I find I'm the main author) - I might add something, & then the link can be included in the text. The {{ Statues in India}} template does need further inclusion of relevant pages to move it beyond a basic listing of colossal works. Another Believer, another (believer) knowledgeable and prolific Wikipedia sculpture editor, may have insight on how to further its usefulness and completeness.
