Merger proposal, March 2024

I propose that Police district, Police precinct and Police area be merged into the longer Police division, as they are just variant names for the same thing.

The merged article should then be renamed to Police district as the most generic name. The old history of that page should be moved to e.g. Talk:Police district/Archived for attribution.

Police village was a different thing (former municipal gov for small settlements in Canada), so its article should not be merged. – Fayenatic London 15:31, 25 March 2024 (UTC) reply

Disagree strongly. regarding "police area". They are not the same thing at all. In the UK, "Police Area" is a legal term found in legislation and is the geographic area a police force is responsible for policing. Its is a different concept to legal jurisdiction of police officers. A police division on the other hand is one term that can be used to describe how a police force itself organises itself within its police area. Other terms can include BCU, district, LPA for this internal organisation but can vary wildly from police force to police force.
In the UK "police area" is a key part of how police forces are organised and should not be merged with the other suggested terms. Bowchaser ( talk) 14:05, 27 March 2024 (UTC) reply
