To dramatize his wartime record, Hellmuth manipulated the facts somewhat, it seems. Quite common for a certain kind of Nazi officials. One can find only one wound by enemy action during his military service with bavarian army. A roster entry, written in 1918, reads as follows:
End of July, 1918, he was transferred to Replacement battalion, Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 8, and
(no single mention of any gassing, let alone severe, neither in 1918, nor any other time. Four times wounded might be somewhat misleading, because one should think that he was repeatedly harmed by enemy action)
