Yup. There was undoubtedly a scandal, but no evidence of any 'satanic sex' being involved. I acknowledge the merit of @Hod Gadling's position that hysteria is not a good word to use, but my position on this is to the contrary for the following reasons. Literal/historical meaning of the term "hysteria" notwithstanding, current mainstream usage of the word is to describe incidents that affect mass groups of people, such as the topic of this article is about.
