When he wrote his work "Historical Expressions" he surprised his readers by his pertinent analyses of the causes of certain phenomena, although some data are highly exaggerated, such as the strength of certain armies.

Chalcocondil felt bereaved by the feuds which divided the Byzantine princes, whose fortresses kept surrendering to Mohammed one after the other; that is why he describes Dacia, i.e. Wallachia, as a stronghold which might withstand the Ottoman invasions; the reason was that "immediately upon his becoming a prince, Vlad surrounded himself with a personal guard which was always in his vicinity", he impaled the traitors, and "used their money, estates and all their other belongings to reward his faithful servants".

Further on the author states that "not long after that, there was much improvement and the situation in Dacia was much changed by this man".

One can see that a historian, a remarkable scholar, and a witness to the events of the time appreciates Vlad Tepes's activity as a justice maker (including even the use of merciless exemplary punishment) as a must in the process of turning a disintegrated state into a united state capable to withstand Mohammed's armies. Chalcocondil continues his work by relating the conflict between the Ottomans and the Wallachians, between Mohammed II and Vlad Tepes.
