Official languages

@ Chandan Guha: Hi, is there a source that says Santali is official in this region? Or is it based on that 10% thing? Does this source support that Santali is spoken by 10% of the people in a specific block? If yes, IMO we should link this source. - Fylindfotberserk ( talk) 18:03, 16 August 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Fylindfotberserk:Language information in 2011 census is only at the district and above level. That makes things difficult because the tribals, mainly Santals in West Bengal, are not spread uniformly across the district but are concentrated in certain CD blocks. Fortunately, the ST data is available at the block level. Going by that, wherever the ST proportion is high I have marked Santali as an official language. See Khatra (community development block) page. I have been able to work on the Purulia and Bankura districts to a large extent and also provided relevant information on the subject, but I have to work on the Jhargram district, and may be Paschim Medinipur district also. The District Census Handbooks have some information similar to the Gazettes. Things are a bit easy in the western districts because a bulk of the ST population speak Santali. Other languages are spoken by a very few. Things are very complicated in the Alipurduar district in north Bengal. It has a high ST population but it is not clear which areas speak Mundari or Oraon, and very few Santali. Things won't be clear unless the government releases language information at the CD block level, like they have released the religion data at the CD block level for the first time in 2011. Thanks for taking interest. Cheers. - Chandan Guha ( talk) 22:39, 16 August 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Chandan Guha: Will it be OK if we put a note in the infobox instead of an (*) like bengali, English, Santali [a] You are welcome. I'm interested in every state and region I've ever lived. - Fylindfotberserk ( talk) 08:24, 17 August 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Fylindfotberserk: I would not like to clutter up the Infobox. The note is already there in the Demographics section. I think that language and religion are not very relevant in small places like Khatra. It is okay over a wider area. However, some language enthusiasts have made a mess of it.
