A few comments

These are some suggestions to improve your article to GA class (most of them are based on comments made by other reviewers for an article I nominated to GA):

  • You can expand a bit more the article's lead, with a summary of all the main points in the article (I think it is not necessary, but it would make the article more interesting)

* "He was ordered to North Carolina in 1865, and was planning an expedition up the Roanoke river to co-operate with the army of the James, when Lee surrendered." It is recommended to avoid one-sentence paragraphs. (you can merge it with the following paragraph, if you like)

  • Check all your inline citations and notes. They should be after punctuation mark always
  • "In 1858 he was married to Henrietta, daughter of George W. Young, a large plantation owner of the District of Columbia, whose family was prominent in the settlement and history of Maryland." You should cite that sentence.
  • "General Ewing was an ambitious, literate, and erudite officer who held a strong sense of responsibility for the men under his command" I am not sure if that sentence should be cited, but please try to do so.
  • according to the report of General Burnside, "by a brilliant change of front he saved the left from being completely driven in." You should cite that

Later on a more experienced user might give you more suggestions, or may rate your article. Dalobuca 00:18, 22 May 2007 (UTC) reply

GA Fail

There are a few issues with this article. It goes into extraordinary (unnecessary) detail at times- This quote "He made the journey to California by way of New Orleans and Texas, passing through Mexico from the Rio Grande to Mazatlan on the Pacific, crossing the Cordilleras on mule back, and returning in 1852 by way of Panama, with dispatches for the government." was the most egregious example.

Otherwise, though, the article had a lot of useful information on his background, although I note that there are a few controversial statements that are uncited:

"He was ordered to North Carolina in 1865, and was planning an expedition up the Roanoke river to co-operate with the army of the James, when Lee surrendered."

"In the Battle of South Mountain he led the assault which drove the enemy from the summit; and at midnight of that day he received an order placing him in command of a brigade." I also note that there are a few red links that need to be delinked. When you have gone over the article and fixed these mistakes, (note that these were not the only errors) leave a message on my talk page and I'll rereview it! ErleGrey 23:02, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply

GA pass

All of the concerns I had with this article originally have now been fixed. Good job, by the way. ErleGrey ( talk) 20:03, 5 August 2007 (UTC) reply
