Although it doesn't currently fit into the article, there is a bit of information I wanted to record in case there is room for it in the future.
Kimball Webster school was closed to students at the conclusion of the 1986-1987 school year. At that time it contained second and third grade classes, with third grade being on the top floor.
Around the time of the closing of the school, there was a ceremony to place a time capsule, and to retrieve one that was burried, from what I remember, 50 years or more earlier. Although a woman was on hand who was a student at the school at the time it was burried the older capsule was never found, possibly because it was burried at the foot of a tree which may no longer be in place. The new time capsule, containing newspapers, artifacts from the students, and noteably the hat of the school janitor, was burried at the base of the new flagpole. ( I remember the flag being mounted to the front of the building near the entrance before that.)
At some point in the past, this building contained a school bell up in the "steeple" area. From what I remember being told while a student there, in a storm the bell came loose, crashed through the floors and shattered in the basement. The bell was never replaced.
Also, I did not see mentioned the fact that an early one-room school house still stands on Old Derry Road, complete with carriage house, connected desks, and slate chalk-boards.
Someone may wish to do more research, but I remember being shown, on a school trip next door to the Hills Memorial Library, several very old documents from the town's history. I vaguely recall one predating the creation of the United States and bearing mention of the colony and/or the King of England. The documents were behind glass in the lofted area of the library which is visible from the main floor on the side of the entrance. I do not know if these documents are publicly viewable.
This is all from the memory of a third-grade child some 20 years out, so there may be some inaccuracies, but since the first time capsule was lost I thought it would be nice to use current technology to remind people, hopefully in the future, that the newer one is in place. -- Kitsune818 13:39, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
