The first article of the Estonian Wikipedia was "Viki" [link] Until October 2003, new articles were created very slowly - until then, an average of 1,5 articles were written each day. Mainly thanks to the first Estonian contributors, the number of articles began to reach 1000. As the 23th version, the Estonian Wikipedia reached this milestone in November 2003. The daily amount of articles created was modest until January 2004, when it rose to an average of 26 articles a day (the earlier record was 8). Because of this, the Estonian Wikipedia rose to the 18th position in number of articles created.[viide]

On the basis of the number of articles changing, it is possible to bring up 3 periods in the Estonian Wikipedia's history. The first of which lasted until the beginning of 2004, where very few articles were created. From 2004-2006 the creation of articles fastened and new contributors joined. By 2006 the situation stabilised and from then on the growth has been steady.

From December 2005. the daily number of articles created has been on average over 20. In this regard, in the second half of 2006, this growth was the most active. In August on average 71 new articles were created every day, which is to this day the record. The tempo fell by the end of 2007 and from then on the number of articles created steadily fell until the Autumn of 2011. [viide]

From the middle of 2006 until the middle of the next year the Estonian Wikipedia stayed at the 31. place in the number of articles compared to other Wikipedias. From then on a slight decrease began and by spring 2011, 9 versions of Wikipedia had passed the Estonian Wikipedia. It stayed on the 40th place until the beginning of 2013, sometimes temporarily changing position.

On the 1st of September 2008 a new front-page design was adopted. The categories "Nädala artikkel" (Article of the week) and "Nädala pilt" (Picture of the week) were created to divert attention to good articles and pictures, whence newcomers could learn. The category "Kas teadsid, et ..." (Did you know, that ...) was also created, and theme portals were created. Good articles started to be chosen from the second half of 2007, by now there are 125 of them.

At the beginning of 2010, the first large journalistic article, that was written from the Estonian Wikipedia was published in the magazine "Horisont".[viide]

From the beginning of 2011, coöperation with universities has thickened and even more students have taken part in the creation of Wikipedia articles as a part of their studies. This is reflected in the statistics of the number of articles. [viide]. By the middle of 2012 about 1% of all articles were created by students. [viide].
