The article should mention that the Clements- Happy Chandler feud persisted as it did because both men lived into the 1980s. In those days, all Kentucky institutions were grounded in reverence for gray beards. A Kentuckian did not lose his eminence until he stopped returning phone calls, or died. This is a characteristic of premodern societies.

The entry makes two claims about Clements are governor of Kentucky that leave me skeptical.

Claim: Clements spent a lot of money on roads and built many 4 lane highways.

My Response. In the 1950s, Kentucky outside of Appalachia was covered with 2 lane paved roads. Non-Federal highways in Appalachian Kentucky often left a great deal to be desired. Many were not paved. If they were paved, they were in poor shape, in part because of the beating they took from trucks hauling coal. But there were few 4 lane roads anywhere in Kentucky. In fact, the only ones I can think of were 31W from Louisville to Elizabethtown, and 60 from Frankfort to Lexington. In much of the Midwest, the interstate system paralleled a 4 lane divided Federal highway whose only real failing was its lack of limited access. This was seldom true in Kentucky, where an interstate highway or toll road replaced a road that was little more than a paved 19th century track. The Kentucky Turnpike, which opened in 1956, was pushed and built by Clements's successor Lawrence Wetherby. All other toll roads in Kentucky were built at the initiative of Bert Combs or later governors.

Claim: Clements built the Kentucky Exposition Center and Louisville's giant sports arena, Freedom Hall. My Response. This complex, which first opened in 1956, was almost surely designed as well as built under Wetherby. 123.255.61.201 ( talk) 11:23, 12 July 2008 (UTC) reply

This is a very good article overall, though I did find a couple issues:

• "He served for a total of 28 months, attaining the rank of captain, and mustered out on September 12, 1919." 'mustered out' feels jargony to me, even though i can discern what it means rather easily.

• Changed to "was discharged".

• "Clements accepted, and consequently had to refuse a later request from his boyhood friend, A. B. "Happy" Chandler, to fill the same position for his campaign." Any information on the early friendship?

• I wish. Only one source that I have found mentions it, but it would be fascinating, given that they became bitter political rivals for decades, apparently over this one event.

• At 10 paragraphs, perhaps the governor section should be split or paragraphs combined.

• I've combined a couple of paragraphs. An image would help break things up, but images for this time period are hard to find without copyright restrictions.

• "Clements replaced the Kentucky Highway Patrol, which had become a corrupt vehicle of political patronage, with the Kentucky State Police." So the state police was new at that time? If so then I'm reading it right, if not then fix.

• That's correct. KSP was a new organization, replacing the highway patrol.

• The prose in general is rather simplistic. I have no problem with this at all, and prefer it actually, but there might be FA concerns on whether the prose is "compelling enough". That's an (non?)issue for later though.

• Right now, I'm just shooting for GA, but I'll keep this in mind should I take it further.

Why no photo of article subject while photo portraits of his political rivals are retained? I see Clements' portrait was removed a year ago but can't work out reason for removal and lack of a replacement 156.99.40.14 ( talk) 21:11, 25 August 2013 (UTC) reply

Although it was a little more complicated than this, the Clements portrait was essentially deleted because it was possibly unfree. Per Wikipedia's image use policy, images uploaded to Wikipedia either have to be public domain, freely licensed, or used under a justifiable fair use rationale. So far, I haven't been able to find an image of Clements that is either public domain or freely licensed. Works of the US Federal government qualify, and since he was an influential senator, I'm sure something exists, but I haven't found anything online yet. If a free alternative exists, fair use is out.
