I flagged this as needing context, since it never says what it's about. However, there are more than a dozen pages linking here, so this doesn't seem to be a nonsense article.

I tagged this article because, while I contains a treasure trove of information, it reads less like an encyclopedia article and more like a posting to a railfan message board.
Much of the detail, such as specific horn models or the long lists of locomotive numbers detailing the exact provenance of each unit,should go, as it is of little interest to a general audience, and Wikipedia is not a railfan's spotters guide
Truthfully, each section should probably be stripped down to answer three questions:
Details beyond that, other than perhaps a distinguishing feature of that model, should be eliminated. After all, these locomotives are more alike than different, being based on a common platform, and widely adopted due to the commonality of that platform. This article should be a shorter, more basic overview of that, not the be-all-end-all guide it is trying to be. oknazevad ( talk) 12:23, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

This article is a regular magnet for unsourced information and has entire sections which are unsourced. I think a tag at the top indicating a need for improved references is justifiable. Mackensen (talk) 15:18, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
This article seems to be missing the most significant EMD GP40-based passenger locomotive, the F40PH and its derivatives—475 units built new by EMD dwarfs by far anything else on this list, and the original F40PH was just a GP40-2 with an HEP generator and a cowl. I'm curious if this is a conscious choice, since I think it would make the most sense to see a section on the F40PH or at least a reference to its own article. Thoughts? Interesting. The intent is that this article should be limited to GP40 only and not include the Dash 2 line? Every single one of the types listed on this page were upgraded to Dash 2 spec sometime in their lifetime (true of most freight GP40s also, if they lasted long enough), but more importantly a couple (at least GP40P-2 and GP40MC) were built as Dash 2 units at EMD originally.
For example, in 1988 Morrison-Knudsen rebuilt five GP40s into F40PHL-2 for Tri-Rail. This seems basically the same as the six GP40s they rebuilt into GP39H-2 for MARC a few years prior except that the Tri-Rail units got a new cowl and cab (and more horsepower.)
So at the very least this article needs to be more clear about what it’s including and what it isn’t. If its only pre-‘72 locomotives and rebuilds that keep the sheet metal intact, the intro should be more clear. Akosut ( talk) 08:55, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

This page needs a TON of updating, especially with the GP40WH-2 section. The reason I state this is that the remaining GP40WH-2 units that have not been rebuilt for SunRail are in possession of leasing firms (for example: ex-MARC #57 is owned by PNLX [1]).
