Changed to Pop genre

This song is pop not rock. Uddhav9 ( talk) 18:09, 24 June 2018 (UTC) reply

@ Uddhav9: Please provide a reliable source to support your claim. The song doesn't become pop because you think it is. If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial. Hayman30 ( talk) 23:58, 24 June 2018 (UTC) reply

Genre is Tropical House which is part of Dance / Electronic

This track might be based on a rock song, but it has been changed to Dance / Electronic by Kygo. If you bother to read his Wikipedia article you will see he produces Tropical House. He does not lay down rock tracks! This is clear to any knowledgeable person listening to the track, and it is referenced as such by Google, Billboard, an article on Vol.at. Anyone who knows Rock, EDM, pop music, House etc. will know that this is not a rock track. Whoever classified it as rock is wrong. So User:Hayman30 quit reverting this and educate yourself instead! The infobox genres need to match whatever is in the composition section and the genres must be supported by good secondary sources. The first of these two requirements isn't met as the two do not match. The second isn't either as there are no sources in the article that back this statement. Aoi (青い) ( talk) 14:58, 5 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Aoi:This track is classified as Dance by iTunes. Soundcloud classifies this as Dance / EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Vol.at is recognized by Google as a valid source of news. Radio Alice calls Kygo an EDM superstar. Digital Journal says this, 'With "Born To Be Yours" and Kygo's solid production they are able to introduce their sound to a wider audience, the electronic dance music (EDM) fans. This is a match made in musical heaven. This tune will definitely be a club banger for festivals and nightclubs.' I agree that the rest of the article should also be edited to reflect the correct genre. [3] [4] [5] rrcatto ( talk) 08:39, 6 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Richard Catto: Your comment shows obvious signs of WP:OR, and I do not appreciate your tone. You're literally a quintessential example of genre warriors described at WP:GWAR. Google is not a source and Billboard did not call this song tropical house, and Vol.at is not a reliable source per se. Wikipedia requires additional references for song genres, just because Kygo is a tropical house producer does not mean this song is tropical house, we need independent sources. For the record, the source you provided (which isn't a reliable) says "alternative rock meets tropical house", it does not use direct language and it's not even directly attributing the genre(s) to the song. Please see WP:EXPLICITGENRES. Hayman30 ( talk) 15:08, 5 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Hayman30: I apologize for my tone. I suggest that this track be classified under multiple genres: Pop, Rock, Dance, Tropical House. The body of the article should be harmonized with this classification. rrcatto ( talk) 08:39, 6 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Richard Catto: Your suggestion is invalid because the genres you provided are not supported by sources. Your knowledge is not a source. We need a reliable source explicitly saying that the song belongs to those genres. I'm not sure what you meant by "harmonize". Hayman30 ( talk) 08:44, 6 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Hayman30: No 11 of this article's references mentions "tropical chord progressions" and "Kygo hasn’t forgot his musical roots as he finds ways to integrate his tropical stamp into the mainstream." An article on EDM Tunes says, "Soon enough, the tropical elements arise". We Rave You says, "Featuring Kygo’s frequently popish allure and signature tropical house synth leads". We Rave You says in their About page "FOUNDED IN 2012 FOR THE PURPOSE OF SHARING AND PROMOTING ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC". Radio Alice, linked above, explicitly says this track is for EDM fans. It doesn't get clearer than this, that Kygo has taken a rock song and mixed a Tropical House track out of it. It's a collaboration between Kygo and Imagine Dragons to produce a new sound. [6] [7] rrcatto ( talk) 13:09, 6 September 2018 (UTC) reply

Billboard.com is considered a reliable source and they have an article which says, 'Kygo and Imagine Dragons debut at No. 3 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated June 30) with "Born to Be Yours."' This proves beyond a doubt that Dance / Electronic is the correct genre. [8] rrcatto ( talk) 13:35, 6 September 2018 (UTC) reply

I agree that Billboard.com is considered a reliable source. In fact, Billboard is cited in this article's composition section, and the Billboard article cited exprsesly says (and this is a direct quote): ""Born To Be Yours" is broad sweeping radio rock with a hint of folk." It does not get more direct than that. I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong by any means; I'm just saying we need to go with what the sources expressly and explicitly state. Aoi (青い) ( talk) 03:48, 7 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Aoi: In the article, reference 10 contains this explicit categorization: "It’s also some of the most classic Kygo production we’ve heard from him in a while, reviving that all-too-familiar tropical house vibe in a new and exciting way." The author clearly states it is Tropical House. Tropical House is a sub-genre of House which is part of Dance / Electronic aka EDM. [9] rrcatto ( talk) 03:25, 16 September 2018 (UTC) reply
I don't believe that is explicit. A dance song may have a rock "vibe" or vice versa. A folk song may have a jazz influence. Unless explicitly stated, best left out IMHO. Doctorhawkes ( talk) 06:31, 16 September 2018 (UTC) reply
  • Nooooo! The song charting on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart doesn't mean it's dance/electronic. That's WP:OR. The article is merely reporting that the song charted on that specific chart. This isn't a matter of reliability. And futhermore, how do you determine if the song is dance or electronic? We will need a source that explicitly says the song belongs to these genres, or any other genre, for that matter. Hayman30 ( talk) 04:32, 7 September 2018 (UTC) reply

Genre changed to Electronic Dance Music

Finally, the editors have seen sense and allowed the genre to be updated to EDM (Electronic Dance Music). However, this classification is still too broad. EDM is a broad genre encompassing many sub-genres including House and all its sub-genres. The correct sub-genre for this track is Tropical House, as can be seen by this quote:

"Born To Be Yours" is broad sweeping radio rock with a hint of folk. Hand claps and acoustic guitars shape verses over a chill electronic beat, and when the hook hits, it comes in coconut flavored in classic Kygo fashion

[1]

For the uninitiated, "coconut flavored" in this context is a direct reference to Tropical House. rrcatto ( talk) 08:50, 17 June 2019 (UTC) reply
