Hi. This is the talk page for a Wikipedia article, thus we use it to discuss points about the article itself, not the subject. You may want to try the Wikipedia:Reference desk Edward Z. Yang( Talk) 21:24, 25 April 2006 (UTC) reply

Ummm... The book doesn't start with Tony going to school. Thats Chapter 6. This entry is inaccurate and poorly written. don't trust

Quite true. It is generally right, but has some humongous errors. Kind of like driving a ferrari with sugar water instead of gasoline, no seatbelts, and a tv instead of a rearview mirror.

December 21, 2011: I have begun to rewrite this article beginning with the Lead to get more facts out there on the importance of the book at least to the American middle school, high school and undergraduate curriculum and also to give an overview of the main idea of the novel. I have added two specific citations and a bibliography that will be used to add a section on the criticism on the novel once the plot information can be rearranged. Yes, it is true the novel begins with Tony's birth which puts his destiny in the hands of Ultima, but I haven't got to redoing that part yet. The paragraph I have just completed on the first chapter (Plot) now alludes to the dream as flashback and I do not interpret that language as implying that his birth is where the novel begins.See what you think. LBoccherini ( talk) 09:13, 29 December 2011 (UTC) reply

The whole section on the characters has to be rewritten as it is a cut and paste job from SparkNotes! LBoccherini ( talk) 08:11, 2 January 2012 (UTC) reply

Next Steps

I have made numerous citations to verify factual information especially regarding claims of accolades, accomplishments, theatrical adaptations and the like many of which are only readily found on established internet web pages.

I have cited two sources for the claim that BMU is an example of a "nonderivative American literature." There is much more to be said about that statement, but where the statement is located is not the place. LBoccherini ( talk) 01:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC) reply

I have added auxiliary information with pertinent websites on pertinent cultural information such as the Llorona legend as the Wikipedia page is not at this point complete enough.

I have added information to the beginning of the plot section to clarify that what the reader knows about the portending conflict between the protagonist's mother and father and Ultima's intervention comes through his dream as a flashback.

There is much more to be done especially in the two sections I have suggested should be added before the plot.

Since its publication in 1972,BMU has continued to gain attention due to its widespread use in schools and the ensuing numerous bans and "book burnings" by parents in selected school districts.

Given that reality how does this novel get an update on its importance?

It would be good if there were others out there interested in improving the comprehensiveness and quality of this page. LBoccherini ( talk) 23:36, 28 December 2011 (UTC) reply

Fair use rationale for Image:BlessMeUltimaCover.jpeg

Image:BlessMeUltimaCover.jpeg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Plot Summary

I am thinking of addressing some of the holes and lack of specificity in the plot. I plan on following the plot more chronologically and looking at some of the specific instances, which shape Antonio's exploration of religion and identity such as the murders he witnesses and the flashbacks. Hopefully, the new plot section will weave both the larger themes, which are already mentioned and weaved in with more specific anecdotes from the text in a chronological order. A useful source in building a Censorship section is the essay "Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry" from the book Censored Books Critical Outlines in which Anaya provides his own opinion of the censorship incidents with his novel. However, to balance it, testimonials from individuals and/or groups who want to ban and/or challenge it should be provided

The source for the statement "As of 2012, Bless Me, Ultima has become the best-selling Chicano novel of all time. The New York Times reports that Anaya is the most widely read author in Hispanic communities, and sales of his classic, Bless Me, Ultima (1972) have surpassed 360,000." leads to a non-authoritative, questionable source called "Writing the Southwest" that comes from 1996 and therefore is not recorded "As of 2012". It would be much better if the source directly leads to the New York Times article that makes this claim, or a source that is far more updated Pv186 ( talk) 17:29, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Pv186 reply
