Question

How different is this article than the Roosevelt Corrolary to the Monroe Doctrine?

There's quite a bit of repetition between the first and the second-last paragraphs. Nikkimaria 21:30, 21 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Corollary?

Doesn't big stick diplomacy refer to the entire foreign and domestic policies of Theodore Roosevelt? Not simply his corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. JavaDog 01:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC) reply

Neutrality?

It seems to me that using the phrase 'international police force' isn't very neutral. 75.165.98.140 14:45, 8 November 2007 (UTC) reply

Review

OK, I usually just add comments and help complete it as well.

I did a minor copy edit myself. Things we need to do...

  • We need to fix the positioning of the sources. They should all really come at the end of the full sentence. Some people put them after the comma but I'm not a fan of that either. They really should come at the end of the sentence like I said. If the source is meant to be for a specific word or part of the sentence but quote marks around that part and then add the source at the end of the sentence.
    • For example, Historians viewed Roosevelt as "a very mean bully" before he became emperor of the world.[5]Realist 2 17:30, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • There needs to be better formatting of the notes. Current note #2 by "Beale 1957" is good. The author and year are wikilinked and the page numbers are normal written. However notes like #4 and #5 are different. The page number has been included in the blue linking. It doesn't even clearly identify a page number as it has no "p.". Try to get all notes formatted like #2. — Realist 2 17:30, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Was the Beale book written in 1957 or 1956? The notes section and references section give different dates. — Realist 2 17:34, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • In the notes section you have used "Bermann 1986, p. 149" yet I can't see this book in the references section. — Realist 2 17:38, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Current note #14 this, is unreliable for wikipedia, Answers.com isn't considered reliable, I'm sure we can find a better source though. — Realist 2 17:46, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Roosevelt's prolific reading habits. - Is the word prolific an opinion? If so, put the word prolific between quotes "prolific". It might be nice to say who called it "prolific". — Realist 2 17:54, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Roosevelt was quite bigoted, and most historians since the 1970s have summarized that the corollary was influenced by Roosevelt's personal beliefs as well.[15][16] - Here you really need to establish who believes he is a bigot and make it clear that it is an opinion, not necessarily a fact (I don't know anything about the guy to comment lol). — Realist 2 17:59, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
OK, I think that's everything. Let's get this sorted , I'll give it a second look and it should be good. — Realist 2 18:09, 28 August 2008 (UTC) reply
OK, everything seems done to me (you should have called me, I don't bite :-)), I'll read over it one more time and then hopefully it's ready. — Realist 2 02:40, 29 August 2008 (UTC) reply

John McCain Saying It for Pakistan

I really couldn't find any reference but I saw it live, it was during the US election campaign of 2008-09 but I remember him saying "speak softly and carry a big stick" when he was asked about Pakistan's role in war against terrorism. If somebody find a reliable reference kindly post it in. I think its worth mentioning in the article. Sarmadhassan ( talk) 20:16, 2 September 2009 (UTC) reply

does Roosevelt's policy define the big stick?

I always thought the proverb meant having military capabilities, but negotiating with other parties in a non threatening way. Just because Roosevelt quoted the proverb, doesn't mean he followed it to the letter. after all proverbs are general sayings, and it really isn't meant to be specific. 67.176.160.47 ( talk) 05:02, 2 September 2010 (UTC) reply

Peanuts parody

Wouldn't it be worth mentioning that the quote is parodied in some Peanuts cartoons (Snoopy features as The Fearless Leader)? Sally tries to threaten some other children on the playground, holding Snoopy under her arm and saying: “Speak softly / loudly, and carry a beagle!“ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.115.83.202 ( talk) 13:53, 25 November 2013 (UTC) reply

Edit Note

"...four days before the assassination of President William McKinley who died eight days later..."

What Roosevelt actually wrote about spanking...

There are two problems with this quote. The first is that the quote does not apply to the Cuba situation, rather Roosevelt was writing about a dispute between Great Britain and Germany with respect to Venezuela. Its usage here is WP:Synth. The second is that the quote itself has been cherry picked. What Roosevelt actually wrote was, “If any South American country misbehaves against any European country let the European country spank it.” There are multiple articles here on the Mighty Wik where this quote is misused.
