folklore and mythology

The old page contained provocative and non-factual statements such as: "The first specimen of Azerbaijan mythology is included in works of Herodotus, which were the reflection of people's literary thinking concerning the reasons of collapsing Medes, an ancient Azerbaijan state, and its occupation by Iran.". I am suprised that someone can put such statement in the article and any revert of such ahistorical and provocative statements will be noted to admins. It is disheartening to note this is coming from an official website, however, the Medes were an Iranian people, Herodotus does not have anything about Turkic mythology (which would be the genesis for any Azerbaijani myth since that is the language of the myths) and the Medes were an Iranian empire (not Turkish). The old page also contained Zoroastrian mythology which should be in an article on Zoroastrian religion and Iranian mythology. However, "Azerbaijani mythology" is not attested in google books. I moved the page from mythology to folklore. Although the two concepts have similarities, they are different. Mythology is usually associated with a religion or a major groups of civilizations. For example there is "Turkic mythology" and "Iranian mythology", but "Azerbaijani Mythology" [1] is not attested. Rather there is Azerbaijani folklore [2] which contains elements from Turkic mythology as well as local folklore.

Usually shared elements within a mythology (say Turkic mythology or Iranian mythology) are called by scholars with their shared element name (hence "Turkic mythology" or "Iranian mythology"). But virtually all areas of the world have some sort of folklore which should not be confused with a developed set of mythology which contains uniqe creation stories, origin stories of a people, and creation of the universe (cosmogeny..). If someone does not agree with the move, and want to create a separate Azerbaijani mythology page, I believe it should be redirected to Turkic mythology or possiblly merged with this page under a new title such as "Azerbaijani folklore and myths". Whatever the users decide, the Zoroastrianism, Herodotus and Medes etc are not classified as "Azerbaijani mythology" by contemporary scholars and such trivial matters are well known by many users and admins. Please use scholarly WP:RS sources when possible and not websites/weblogs when writing articles. -- Khodabandeh14 ( talk) 03:07, 28 February 2011 (UTC) reply
