I also thought about it, not a bad idea but if you check the names of other Qatari players,
Ibrahim Majid,
Khalfan Ibrahim,
Hussein Yasser and etc, they used the first 2 parts of their names. but Yusef Ahmed is a naturalized player, His real name is something different. so I'm not really sure which one is better. also his complete new name is Yusef Ahmed M. (maybe Mohammed) Ali !! --

Somebody added that he was born in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Do you perhaps have a source for that, Mohsen? (You just mentioned, he is a naturalized player.) --
Happolati (

I still think that if FIFA names him 'Ali', then that is his official name.
GiantSnowman 14:41, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
OK, I am going to move it back to 'Yusef Ali', as that is what the sources currently on the article confirm; Mohsen1248, if you are still admant to move the page, please use
WP:RM. That sound fair enough to everyone? Thanks and regards,
GiantSnowman 14:50, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
He is a Somalian player (not sure if he born in Saudi Arabia or Somalia) but I think it's very hard to find any source for it, since the Qatari federation illegally naturalized him (as far as i know)
FIFA website isn't 100% accurate, especially for the players who didn't play in World Cup finals. AFC name him Yusef Ahmed, even his name is Yusef Ahmed in Arabic wikipedia, he wrote "Y. Ahmed" on his shirt. --
Mohsen1248 (
talk) 14:52, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
did you even see my examples ? you can move this page to Ahmed Ali when you move Sebastian Soria to Andres QUINTANA. please don't be obstinate, your source is FIFA website and I proved you that FIFA isn't accurate. --
Mohsen1248 (
talk) 15:07, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
You have proved that FIFA makes some mistakes - no website is 100% accurate. However, English-language sources provided on the article show that he is known, in English, as 'Yusef Ali', and that is where the article should be located.
GiantSnowman 15:14, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
and many English-language sources call him Yusef Ahmed, especially AFC,
report of the last match. and surely AFC know Qatari players (and arabic naming system) more than FIFA. --
Mohsen1248 (

another example,
Seyed RAHMATI is
Mehdi Rahmati as an Iranian I know Seyed is just a title, not his given name ! but FIFA wrongly call him Seyed Rahmati and many sources just copying from FIFA ! --
Mohsen1248 (
talk) 15:22, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
AFC also refers to the player in question as
Yusef Ali, so that, by your logic, isn't a reliable source either...
GiantSnowman 15:28, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
I never said AFC is 100% accurate. this article is wrote by someone who don't know this player. his complete name is Yusef Ahmed M. Ali and anyone who don't know Arabic naming system (which is really strange) can wrongly name him Yusef Ali. go to
AFC website, click on Live Match Cast, then find Qatar and see Qatar's squad. --
Mohsen1248 (

Yes, I've seen the AFC website, and as I've said, it uses both variants of the name - who is to say which is right?! FIFA and NationFootballTeams, at least, are consisent with 'Ali' and I'm moving the article there. Should you wish to move it back, please use
WP:RM. Thanks and regards,

Oppose -
FIFA, the governing body of world football, confirms his surname is 'Ali', as does
this widely-used, reliable site. Even the AFC, which Mohsen1248 claims can be used to support 'Ahmed',
refers to the player in question as 'Ali'...
GiantSnowman 17:07, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
Oppose - A player's shirt (!) is no proof at all. Example:
Jakub Błaszczykowski has "Kuba" on his club shirt, because it's his nickname. But of course we don't call our article
Kuba. And if the FIFA uses the name Yusef Ali, we should do that as well. --
Happolati (
talk) 17:49, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
The official site of the Asian Games 2006 which took place in the player's home country, calls him
Yusef Ahmed Ali. By the way: How do you rate the fact, Mohsen, that AFC not only calls him Yusef Ahmed (as you mentioned), but also Yusef Ali (link above)? --
Happolati (
talk) 08:21, 14 January 2011 (UTC)reply
Support - The most common way this person is referred to is as "Yusef Ahmed" not "Yusef Ali". Goal.com recently had an
article using Yusef Ahmed as did an
ESPN article, and the AFC among other organizations refers to him as Yusef Ahmed. FIFA.com is often wrong in spelling player's names, especially ones with Arab backgrounds, so I wouldn't rely on it's use of his name.
Jogurney (
talk) 21:32, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
For full disclosure, I started this article - and did so at "Yusef Ahmed" because goalzz.com and the Gulf Cup websites named him using his first two names. As Mohsen mentions above, that is apparently common for people of Arabic origin.
Jogurney (
talk) 21:40, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
Further disclosure - and I moved the article to 'Yusef Ali' many moons ago, based on the FIFA and NFT links.
GiantSnowman 21:43, 13 January 2011 (UTC)reply
How do we resolve this? I've cited English-language media sources which indicate he is commonly referred to as Yusef Ahmed, while others have noted that football organization sources have used his full name or Yusef Ali. My understanding of COMMONNAME is that the English-language media sources are more important in this regard, but can someone confirm?
Jogurney (
talk) 19:29, 7 February 2011 (UTC)reply
It's up to an admin to make that decision.
