There seems no reason why this concept should not be taken back to the date of the earliest known records although for most of that time you would be talking about the leading cricketer in England only (and in south-east England only at that).
But if Wisden went back to their own inaugural season they would be just in time to catch WG's debut. There can be few seasons between then and 1880 when he would not win and of course it was a one-horse race in 1895.
