Thanks for spotting this. They are two different people. Further investigation found that Walter's dates have been confused with William's. It's hard to find anything definite about William Warne. He seems to have been born around 1890 and to have worked in Wellington as a driver.

He seems to have been born in April 1890 as William Francis Santi. His mother, Nellie, then married John/Giovanni Santi, then married twice more in the 1890s, her third husband being Edward Thomas Warne.
