Perhaps it shoud be introduced into the text, but the "Dictionary of National Biography" ( link) claims that Wales accompanied Cook on his third voyage. He didn't and sources do point out this error - Wales was by that time teaching at the Royal Mathematical School and was, for example, observing the Solar eclipse of June 24, 1778 from there ( report to the Royal Society), while Cook was exploring the west coast of Canada.
