Defined as part of SR 20 from Brookneal to Blackstone in 1918; later (1923?) became SR 323 east of Keysville; SR 351 created from Sussex to Waverly
1928 renumbering: SR 351 became SR 48; SR 323 split at Lunenburg between SR 401 and SR 47
SR 48 later extended to Keysville, and SR 20 to Woolwine
1933 renumbering: SR 20 became SR 40 where not a U.S. Route
SR 48 soon became part of SR 40
I don't think the road was a turnpike near Rocky Mount, despite the name. -- NE2 20:31, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
