This explanation is very suspicious. A Tricouni boot nail is not 3-pointed. Note that "Tricouni" has nothing to do with the number 3. "Tricouni" was the nickname of Félix-Valentin Genecand, who was the inventor of these boot nails (Tricouni being the (real) name of one Italien friend and climber he had in his youth and for whom he had great admiration).
