the custom

The article makes the following statement:

As a boy, Janson joined the Knights of Malta and then the army of the Kingdom of France (as was the custom).

So far as I know, it was never a custom for boys to join the Knights of Malta and then the army of the kingdom of France. Not all Knights of Malta were French, many stayed Knights of Malta, most knights were not recruited as boys. The vague portmanteau statement needs context and a good deal of further specification.
