- Selleck is one of the few open conservatives in Hollywood. He is an outspoken member of the National Rifle Association, and in a well known incident he was verbally attacked by Rosie O'Donnell on her television show over his support of the NRA (before the show, she had promised not to bring up the subject, but says her temper got the best of her; also, this took place in the aftermath of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado). Selleck is a libertarian and is a registered Independent. He has appeared numerous times at fundraisers for the National Review, a conservative opinion magazine. Selleck has done advertisements for the NRA, and is occasionally rumored to become the president of the organization, following in the footsteps of fellow actor, Charlton Heston.
- Selleck was married to actress Jacquelyn Ray from 1970 to 1982. He adopted Ray's son from a previous marriage, Kevin. He married actress Jillie Mack on August 7, 1987, and they have one daughter, Hannah. Selleck, a graduate the University of Southern California a former member of the schools celebrated baseball squad, received an honorary doctorate from Pepperdine University. He was chosen because of his outstanding character and ethics. He is a board member of the non-profit Michael Josephson Institute of Ethics and co-founder of the Character Counts Coalition. He was chosen by People Magazine in 1998 as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. - - Selleck enlisted in the National Guard in 1966 and served in the infantry.
Mr. Selleck is a good man from what I read but none the less just a man.
Don’t get me wrong he is a talented actor, Magnum PI and all the movies he played in where great, but for some reason and maybe I’m just imaging it those shows did not define his life Mr. selleck went on to other activities in politics and charity that he seemed to think where important, The activates he took place in probably gratified him more then the movies he made. If I ever run into tom selleck I hope that I meet the person not the actor I can always go home and watch another movie.
Why was it "surprising" that he would portray General Eisenhower?
Tom Selleck's ancestors are from a region incorporated into Czechoslovakia from 1919 to 1938 by the Treaty of Trianon. This area, known as Ruthenia or Carpatho-Ukraine, had been fought over by Poland, Russia, and Austria-Hungary for centuries, was retaken by Hungary in 1938 until the Soviet invasion of 1944, then incorporated into the USSR and finally independent Ukraine. -- Citation? Can anyone explain the discrepancy of the statement of "Selleck enlisted in the National Guard in 1966 and served in the infantry." and the trivia section entry of "Was a member of the California National Guard and was activated for the Watts riots."? If he enlisted in 1966, how could he have been involved in the Watts riots of 1965? I've seen other sources that he was involved in the riots, but nothing stating his enlistment date/year. If this can't be resolved, the "in 1966" should be removed. -- The Deviant 01:31, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Could we have sources on these characterisations, please? I suppose one might infer from his NR involvement that he's somewhere on the libertarian end of the paleoconservative spectrum, but a self-description and/or reputable third-party source would be good. Alai 18:05, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Even though it states that he "reportedly" lives here, it seems kind of unlikely. I didn't find anything in a database search or a quick Google search. Plus, he would have a harder time with his political work if he lived in Canada and Canada has tougher gun-control laws - not something most NRA members would submit to willingly. Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan to a Rusyn [1] [2] [3] father from Slovakia [4] Robert Selleck (died 2001) and Scottish American Martha Selleck. The family moved to Sherman Oaks when Tom was growing up. Tom's siblings include brother Robert (born 1944), brother Daniel (born 1950), and sister Martha. Selleck graduated from Grant High School, in 1962. [5]
Tom's minor role in the 1970 film, Myra Breckenridge, should be noted on Selleck's Filmography. In the film, he has sex with Mae West, for goodness' sake! It's a small role, but a memorable part of his early career. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.15.16.183 ( talk) 13:27, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
