The Plot

It's not clear to me why we write synopses of TV dramas and films. Is there a discussion somewhere? I can think of at least three reasons

  • the reader may not recognise the title and want to know if she has watched it before
  • the reader may want to know in advance whether it is a subject that she enjoys
  • the reader may be doing research on the genre and would find a synopsis useful as comparison with other material

Each of them would want synopses of different lengths so it's a balancing act and I hope I have found a happy median.

PS I altered my original version and replace family-names of characters by forenames but I see, for example in a synopsis for Spooks [1] that the author has used forenames (Adam, Harry). Is there a style guide on this?
