→The historical King Macbeth fought a Thane of Cawdor who died in battle, but he did not thereby acquire the title himself.
Well maybe, but this is not very consistent with the claim that Thanes were introduced in Scotland in the reign of David I (i.e. not until the following century). At any rate it needs a reference. JBritnell ( talk) 00:13, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
