There is some commentary (apologies, I don’t have it to hand) to the effect that the portrayal of Teucer in the Iliad does not show him to be particularly heroic, as he hides behind his brother Ajax’s shield, which Ajax moves momentarily aside so Teucer can get off a bowshot, then moves back so Teucer can hide again. This is quite in line with Homer’s general disparagement of archers as fighting in a less « manly » way than spearmen (Pandarus breaks the truce by shooting an arrow at Agamemnon, Paris is essentially an archer rather than a spearman, etc.).
