In 1948, after his father's death from bladder cancer, Savalas married his college sweetheart, Katherine Nicolaides.
Does this imply, that his father was against the marriage? Otherwise this seems like a weird connection of unrelated circumstances and would be probably better separated. But even, if it's the intended connection, it would be better to clarrify, like with: "In 1948, after his father's death (who was opposing his son's fiancée) from bladder cancer, Savalas married his college sweetheart, Katherine Nicolaides.
