This article seems very limited in scope - it needs to widen scope to all states - and its messiness is very telling Satu Suro 06:50, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
It seems to me, that it ought to be mentioned somewhere that the ability to operate a taxi depends on owning the taxi 'plate', which is the right to operate the vehicle as a taxi. These are limited in number, perpetual rights, and tradeable, and have a scarcity value of the order of half a million dollars as an investment, which is quite separate from the cost of actually having a suitable car to use the plate. These used to be popular as an investment for tax avoidable purposes as they could not be taxed as easily as land or stock market investments. The 'plate' owners oppose the issuing of more plates, because it would undermine the value of their investment. The high cost of financing the ownership of these plates, or providing a 'return on investment', to their owners, is a major structural impediment to effective performance of the taxi industry. It seems odd to me, that this is not mentioned anywhere. Eregli bob ( talk) 09:21, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Canberra Times newspaper's Headline - Uber to launch in Canberra; ACT government to cut taxi licence fees and regulate ride-sharing
Main article is such a dog's breakfast, i am leaving this momentous news as a "Talk" post. 49.195.158.107 ( talk) 03:04, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
The result of the move request was: speedy moved uncontroversially, as the original mover confirmed that this odd page name was a typo. Paintspot Infez ( talk) 04:18, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Taxis Australia →
Taxis in Australia – This article was originally at
Taxicabs in Australia. At some point, @
Enthusiast01: moved it to this title, noting (correctly) that "taxicab" is not
commonly used in Australia. However, the choice of title has the strange effect of making "Taxis Australia" sound like a business entity (like
Hockey Australia) instead of an abstract topic article (like
Hockey in Australia, which is a dab page, but you get my point). More importantly, moving it would be
consistent with other transport industry topic articles like
Rail transport in Australia,
Roads in Australia, and so on.
